No Information 4.2.a Sheriff's Office Dispositions

What This Graph Tells Us

This graph tracks the different types of dispositions for calls to the Skagit County Sheriff's Office, which measures the percentage of reported crimes that are resolved through an arrest, referral for prosecution, or other exceptional means.

Inactive cases are those where additional action has not been taken. This means either there are no additional leads to pursue or there are no actionable steps that the Sheriff's Office can pursue.

Why This Measure Matters

Clearance rates and dispositions measure how often law enforcement is able to identify and hold individuals accountable for criminal activity. They are an important indicator of the effectiveness of investigations and the overall health of the criminal justice system.

Clearance rates also reflect the quality and capacity of investigative work. They provide insight into staffing levels, training, access to forensic and analytical resources, and collaboration with prosecutors and partner agencies. Declining clearance rates may signal increasing case complexity, workload pressures, or resource constraints that affect investigative outcomes.

Just as importantly, clearance rates influence public trust. When residents see that crimes are taken seriously and followed through to resolution, confidence in law enforcement and the justice system increases. Transparency in reporting clearance rates and dispositions reinforces accountability and demonstrates a commitment to justice for victims and communities alike.

What’s the Story?

The Sheriff's Office pursues all calls for help by the community. Those calls may lead to arrest or referral for prosecution, but many times the Sheriff's Office keeps the public safe through other actionable means. This includes providing crisis and mental health response, outreach and services to unhoused residents, dispute mediation, traffic and accident assistance, safety and welfare checks, public education, and first aid.

Tracking the disposition of each call made to the Sheriff's Office helps us identify and evaluate our complete responses to the community from the initial call to its final outcome and address workload management for officers, provide public transparency and reporting, and ensure accountability to the community.
