Caution 5.3.e. Skagit County’s National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) Community Rating System (CRS) score is a 4 or lower.

What This Graph Tells Us

This graph shows us Skagit County's National Flood Insurance Program rating each year compared to our target rating score of 4.

Why This Measure Matters

The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) Community Rating System (CRS) is a key factor in determining flood insurance premiums for residents in designated flood zones. It encourages communities to implement pre-disaster flood mitigation strategies. The CRS uses a scale from 1 to 10, where 1 represents the highest level of flood mitigation efforts and the best possible insurance rates, while 10 typically indicates jurisdictions not participating in the program. In Skagit County, the current CRS rating is 5. This rating provides residents in the NFIP a 25% discount on their flood insurance premiums. For each improvement in the CRS rating (i.e., moving from 5 to 4), residents would receive an additional 5% discount on their premiums. Conversely, any downgrade would reduce this discount, increasing the cost of flood insurance for the community.
