Why This Measure Matters​

Tracking the number of days before a building permit is reviewed is important to ensure we are providing the best customer service to Skagit County residents looking to build new projects. Efficient building permit approvals helps protect public safety and reduces overall construction costs. If permits are not reviewed in a timely manner, residents could opt to not apply for a permit, which leads to unsafe construction environments and infrastructure.

What’s the Story?​

There have been persistent staff shortages affecting the building inspector team in 2026, as well as staff reductions for the Planning & Development Services Department overall due to budget cuts. As a result, there have been longer than usual delays for building inspections.

The Planning Department has brought on additional staff to conduct building inspections and are cross-training staff from other Planning Department teams to ensure there is a deeper bench to pull from when there are staff shortages.

Target

Building permits should receive an initial review and comments within 28 days of an application being deemed complete.
